Midnight

My rating ***

The book was about a girl called Violet who has a complicated life. She has a brother Will and a love for Casper Dream, an author who writes about fairies. She meets a new friend Jasmine who falls in love with Will and kisses him. Violet runs away and meets Casper Dream for real. She then goes home. To her surprise she finds out that Jasmine wanted to be her friend, not just because she liked Will. She also discovers that she had a real brother called William who had died as a tiny baby. Then her mum adopted Will to try and replace her missing son. Violet's grandma let the story loose  about Will being adopted.

I think this book is really a three sided story. One side is Violet's, one side is Casper Dream's and one side is Violet's family. My favourite character was Jasmine because she was rich but not a mean show-off like some other rich people. She also smells like jasmine flowers and I love jasmine scent.

One part I didn't like was when Will put Jasmine in an attic which had loads of weird bats in them

Third Year at Malory Towers

My rating ***

This book is the third book in the series. It was about Darrell who comes back to Malory Towers and meets the new girls. Their names are Bill, Zerelda and Mavis.

The book was exciting, funny and tragic because it had a lot of activities going on. The tragic bit was that Bill's horse Thunder had colic. Bill and Darrell were up really late trying to enable the horse to lie down so that it wouldn't die.

My favourite character was Bill because she was crazily in love with her horse. She never thought about anything else but him.

The Silver Brumby

My rating *** 1/2

This book is about a mare called Belbel and she had a foal called Thowra for the wind. Her best friend also had a foal on the same day called Storm. They had  journeyed away from the herd to have their foals and then had a long journey back with their young foals.

I liked the part where Thowra rescued Golden from the men. Golden is a golden mare who shines in the winter snow.

I really liked this book because of the way it was written. It was written in the way where sometimes it was from the horses' point of view and sometimes from the men's point of view. It was very interesting to read two sides of the same story.

Ronia, the Robber's Daughter

My rating: ****

This book is orginally in Swedish and it has been translated into English. It is a very daring and brave book.
It is about a girl called Ronia and she loves going into the forest. One day she meets a boy called Birk. My favourite part of this book was when the "rumpenisse" started talking to Ronia and kept saying "why?".
I have watched this movie in Swedish, and I really liked reading the book.

The School Story

My rating: ***** (and a half if possible!)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn't stop reading. I read it all in one day.
My favourite character was Natalie because she was a good listener, reader and best friend. I also liked Zoe because she always talked people into doing what she wanted done.
In this book a sixth grader wrote a book and it got published secretly. The girl who wrote the book was Natalie and her agent was Zoe Reisman.

Stargirl

My rating: **

My favourite character was Stargirl of course because she was independent and fearless. A part I liked was when she played the ukelele. A character that I disliked was David because he was really mean. A part that made me feel sorry for Stargirl was when everybody left without her.

ASOUEBLS ~ Book the First ~ The Bad Beginning

My rating ****1/2

The main characters are Sunny, Klaus and Violet Baudelaire. Violet is the oldest, then Klaus, then Sunny. My favourite was Sunny because she was the smallest and the cutest. She was also very brave. Sunny at one point was in a cage dangling from 100m height.
Violet, Klaus and Sunny's parents died at the beginning of the story, so they have to go and live with their great uncle.

Second Form at Malory Towers

My rating: *****

My favourite character in the second book of the series was Ellen because she was worried about not doing well in her tests. A part that made me scared was when Mary-Lou was holding on to life on the edge of a cliff. Luckily Daphne rescued her. A part that I liked was when Darrel thought she foind her purse but she found a rat instead.

First Term at Malory Towers

My rating: *****

My favourite character was Darrel because shewas brave and independent. In this book Darrel is new to Malory Towers and gets into a lot of trouble. Darrel is not the only new girl, there is Gwendoline and Mary-Lou. Mary-Lou is shy and helpful. Gwendoline is mean and selfish.

Little Darlings

My rating: *****

My favourite characters are Destiny and Sunset because they are sisters who are totally different from each other. They also don't live together. If I had to choose, Sunset would be my favourite because she was faced with more of a struggle.

In this book, the two girls are trying to get their families together since they are half-sisters. The ending is very sweet.

The Dragonfly Pool

My rating: **

This book was not so exciting. It is based on the second world war.

My favourite character was Matteo because he was brave and independent. A part that made me puzzled was when Tally tripped over but didn't fall. Another favourite character was Julie because she was a kind and courageous person.

The Time Twister

My rating: ****

This is the second book in the Red King series with Charlie Bone.

A part that made me laugh was when Charlie was sneaking about and he heard a noise that scared him but it was just his own footsteps. My favourite character was Emma Tolly because she was very useful.

Near the end of the book, Charlie was at the end of his dangerous and exciting quest. By the end of the book my favourite character was Fidelio because he could play eleven different musical instruments.

Midnight for Charlie Bone

My rating: ****

After Harry Potter, I wanted to find another series that was recommended. My teacher Mrs Stewart told me about this series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book because something exciting happened very early. My favourite character was Olivia because she was independent and one of Charlie's best friends.

HP 7

My rating: *****

I could not stop reading this book because it was so exciting. It was a bit scary because Voldemort tried to find and destroy Harry Potter. It was the most thrilling book I have ever read. Does Voldemort die or Harry? Read on to find out...

HP 6

My rating: ****

My mum finally finished all the HP books and has let me start reading the last two books.

A part that made me upset was when Dumbledore died. I was surprised because I thought Dumbledore could not be defeated by a death eater. I was also surprised to find out that Severus Snape was the half-blood prince.

When You Reach Me

My rating: *****

I read this book very quickly because it is quite short. I really enjoyed this book, especially the part where it mentions A Wrinkle in Time, which I read before.

Thursday, 5 May 2011

The Magician's Nephew

My rating: ***

My favourite character is Polly because she is trying to make her sister believe in Narnia. Unfortunately they don't but Polly does not give up. She is kind and caring.

Heroes of Olympus

My Rating: *****

My favourite character was Piper because she was a duaghter of Aphrodites (goddess of love). My least favourite character was Khione because she acted nice but she was actually on the bad side.

Something I would like to know after reading this book is did they ever find Percy Jackson?

I felt scared when a cyclops called Phobion came alive and was 60 feet tall. A part that made me laugh was when Piper ate a tofu burger and found out the tofu was uncooked.

In this book, the prophecy was "childre of lightning, beware the Earth, The giants' revenge the seven shall birth, The forge and dive shall break the cage, And death through Hera's rage". I really like this prophecy. I can't wait to go to the library tomorrow to get another book out.

A Wrinkle in Time

My Rating : ****

This book is written by Madeleine L'Engle. My favourite character was Meg because she was a kind and courageous character. She saved her brother, Charles Wallace, from a fearsome, ugly, red pond dragon.

The author wrote about three characters whose names made me laugh. They were Mrs Who, Mrs Whatsit and Mrs Which.

Meg might look ugly but she was a lovely kindhearted character and she was a sweet person.

I read this book while on holiday in Sri Lanka.

The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies

My Rating: ***1/2

I got an Amazon Kindle for my birthday on Thursday. My mum downloaded 5 books on it for me. This is the first book I chose to read.

My favourite character was not one of the main characters (Jessie and Evan) because they were mean to each other. Instead my favourite was Megan because she was kind and she had a lovely personality. The book is about Jessie and Evan both wanting to have lemonade stands so they make a bet. On Sunday they will count their money and whoever has the most gets to take the losers money.

The most interesting part of the book was how Jessie and Evan tried to cheat and make each other lose. In the end they decided to make it a draw because there was only 89c between them. They also gave the money to an animal shelter. I liked this part because at my birthday party I didn't want presents but donations to QAWS, the local animal shelter.

The Lottie Project

My rating: **** I'm now back to reading some Jacqueline Wilson books. This one is about a girl called Charlotte who is studying about the Victorians and has to do a school project about them. She decides to write diary entries as if she was a Victorian. Every experience she has she relates to Lottie, her fictional Victorian character. For example, when Charlotte's mum started dating a man, she wrote in her diary that Lottie thought her mother could be dating a new man. She wrote that Lottie became a maid in a Victorian house. Lottie would travel by carriage and wear old-fashioned clothes. I thought this book was interesting because I don't know so much about the Victorians.

The Demigod Files

My rating: **** So, I found this in the library. I was hoping that this would be a whole other adventure with Percy Jackson. It was just three chapters and facts about Percy. It also had his summer report. I learned a few new things about Percy. For example, I found out he was rubbish at archery, he only got a C, compared to sword fighting where he got an A+. I also read that Percy, Thalia, and Nico were the only three demigods who the biggest prophecy could be about. This is because they were all born after the big three (Poseidon, Hades, and Zeus) decided that they would have no more children. Whichever child turned sixteen first, is the one who the prophecy would be about. It was not about Thalia because she turned immortal, nor was it about Nico because the demigods worked out that he was actually born before the rule was made. He was put in a hotel where time passed but he did not age. So, it was all about Percy Jackson. The prophecy was a decision that would either kill the gods or make the gods more powerful.

Percy Jackson & the Last Olympian

My rating: ***** This is the final instalment of the Percy Jackson series. I almost didn't want it to end, but I also wanted to know how it would end. The main story in this book is about Kronos's army and they are trying to destroy Olympus. All the half-bloods which includes Percy, have to try and kill them all before they make it to Olympus with Typhon. Typhon is the worst monster that you could ever meet. He is enormous, bald and looks like a rock. He is very strong and could destroy Olympus with the smash of his hand. Olympus is where the gods live and is very special to the half-bloods also. When I finished this book I felt relieved and a bit upset. I have found out that there are another two books called "The Demigod Files" and "The Lost Olympian". I would really like to find these in my school library.

Percy Jackson & the Battle of the Labyrinth

My rating: ****1/2 This is the fourth out of five books in the series. I'm so hooked on them. The author is Rick Riordan and he has written other books called Red Pyramid (series). I like the way he writes because he makes each page more involved with more mysteries to think about and solve. The prophecy in this book is "You shall delve in the darkness of the endless maze, The dead, the traitor, and the lost one raise, You shall rise or fall by the ghost king's hand, The child of Athena's final stand, Destroy with a hero's final breath, And lose a love to worse than death." I was thinking so hard about this prophecy and imagined that I was Athena's child.

Percy Jackson & the Titan's Curse

My rating: ***** This is the third book in the series and I loved it. I have given it five out of five stars. This book made me feel excited when I read it. I felt sorry for Percy's pegasus called Blackjack because he had to keep flying everywhere to help Percy get places. The main adventure was a quest that Percy did not get chosen for. The prophecy in this book is "Five shall go west to the goddess in chains, One will be lost in the land without rain, The Bane of Olympus shows the trail, Campers and Hunters combined prevail, The Titan's Curse must one withstand, And one shall perish by a parent's hand." These prophecies make you really think about what the author means. I was very curious to find out who would perish.

Otherwise Known As Sheila The Great

My rating: **

The title of this book made me think it would be about a girl called Sheila, and she would be very popular or famous. I was wrong. The book was about Sheila and she was scared of loads of things and her mum and dad helped her not be scared of those things. Her friends thought she was a scaredy-cat, but she proved them wrong. For example, she was scared of swimming, but her mum made her do swimming lessons. She had a test at the end of the year, where at first she was scared she would drown, but then when she got into the pool, she put her head in the water and blew bubbles. Her friends shouted "Come on!" and encouraged her. She passed the test and was very proud of herself.

I would recommend this book to younger readers.

Percy Jackson & The Sea of Monsters

My Rating: ****

This is the second book of the Percy Jackson series. It was a little boring compared to the first book.

When Percy plays dodgeball at his school in Manhattan, it becomes a death match against boys who turn into cannibal giants. His best friend Annabeth rescues him and tells him that there is a trouble at Camp Half-Blood. They rush there to save the special Pine Tree that protects the camp.

Percy's friend Grover, who is a satyr (half goat, half human) also gets kidnapped by a cyclops called Polyphemus. It was not Percy's quest, but a girl called Clarisse. Then Percy and his friends must find the Golden Fleece.

It is very interesting to read and learn about Greek mythology and the relationships between the special characters.

Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief

My Rating: *****

A friend of mine recommended this book series to me, because he had heard I enjoyed the Harry Potter books and was looking for something else to read.

This book was awesome! I recommend it to every reader who likes action and isn't scared of monsters, because it is about Greek mythology. Percy Jackson is a half-blood, because his father is a god and his mother is a human. He is one of the most powerful demi-gods because his father is one of the big three (Poseidon, Zeus, Hades).

In this book, the Summer Solstice is coming up and Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen. Everybody thinks the thief is Percy, but it is not him. You will have to read the story to find out the real thief.

Nancy Drew #9

My rating: ****

I chose this book because I read book 8 and it was so interesting that I wanted to read the whole series. I was a teeny bit disappointed because it was about a spa and spas give me the creeps.

I enjoyed the part where Deirdre got her face burnt because she cared so much about her facial appearance that she put on loads of blush until she looked like a clown. She got burnt because she was in the steam room and somebody turned the temperature up too far.

I didn't enjoy the part where the cockroaches came out of the mud bath because I hate cockroaches and it was disgusting because Nancy Drew was in the mudbath.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading mystery books.

Nancy Drew #8

My rating: *****

It's really good, I loved it! I read the first seven books of this series last year, and I found it more interesting now, because everything slotted in and made more sense. I would recommend these books for kids aged 8 and above.

The best part of this particular book was funny. You see, capuchin monkeys were trapped and Nancy Drew fell into their trap and got pulled out by her friends (Bess and George). The monkeys also climbed out making funny sounds and the description of how they escaped was hilarious.

This book made me feel a little scared when Nancy Drew fell into the trap with furry unknown things. Then when Bess shone the torch down the hole she saw they were a type of monkey scattered all over. I also felt a little excited and couldn't stop reading because it was a mystery and I wanted to find out how Nancy Drew solved the mystery.

Lizzie McGuire

My rating: **

This book was boring. It was about a girl called Lizzie McGuire and her friends Gordo and Miranda. They tried to help Lizzie's old best friend Kate when she broke her arm and got kicked off the cheerleading squad and wasn't popular anymore. She showed the cheerleaders that she could still do stuff with a broken arm, such as front flips and one handed cartwheels. When another cheerleader called Claire tried
to do the same moves, she broke her ankle. Kate was back on the team, but Claire was off.

I would recommend this book to younger readers, it was very easy to read.

The Longest Whale Song by Jacqueline Wilson

My rating: ***

I borrowed this book from a friend because it was Jacqueline Wilson's latest book and I hadn't read it and really wanted to. I was a little bit disappointed because it wasn't that great, but it was okay. The book is about a girl called Ella and her mum was going to have a baby, but when she had the baby she lost consciousness and went into a coma. Ella was really upset and tried everything she could to try to wake her mum up. She was having a tough time and all she wanted was her mum. She didn't want anyone else. Her mum and dad were divorced and she lived with her stepdad. I didn't like the story because it was not nice reading about comas and diseases. She had PVS which stands for persistent vegetative state.

Superfudge by Judy Blume

My rating: ***

The title of this book made me think it was would be about chocolate fudge and a boy who liked fudge. I was wrong! Fudge is the nickname of a boy who is five years old and very cute. He calls his older brother Pee-Tah.

In the story Fudge likes to hang out with his brother, but he is younger so he doesn't do things right. One day when Peter goes on a picnic with his friend Alex, Fudge and his friend Daniel smash their piggy banks and ride their bikes to the city. Their parents don't know where they went. They look all around for them. Much later Fudge calls his mum from a shop.

Fudge is always telling funny jokes which made me laugh. He woke his brother up at 1.30 in the morning and had changed his clock so Peter thought it was time to go to school. Peter goes downstairs and gets ready for school so quickly and asks where mum and dad and the car are. Fudge played a funny trick on him.

The Diamond Girls

My rating: ***
The Diamond Girls is about a mother with four daughters who is pregnant with a fifth child. She gives birth to the baby and pretends it is a boy when it is a girl because she wanted it to be a boy really badly. The truth comes out when Dixie, the youngest child, is in a coma in hospital.
I liked this story because it was about a family that had a problem and then they solved the problem. I didn't like this story because a man called Bruce helped them lift all their furniture about when he had a very bad back. After that, he couldn't move because his back was stiff. This made me feel sad because he couldn't move and I thought he was going to die.

HP 5

My rating: *** 1/2

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has 870 pages. It is the longest book in the series. The title of the book made me think it would be about an adventure with phoenixes. I was wrong because it was about Harry Potter's nightmares. Once he dreamed he was a serpent, but then the serpent belonged to Lord Voldemort which then bit Mr Weasley. Harry dreams about whatever Lord Voldemort thinks about. The Order of the Phoenix was actually a group of people put together by Dumbledore to fight Lord Voldemort.

In the end there is one dream that is untrue and helps to kill Sirius Black and saves Harry Potter. This is sad though because Sirius Black is a goodie, and Harry's godfather.

This book made me feel like I couldn't think of anything else until I finished it. I really want to read the next two HP books, but my mum says they might be a little inappropriate, so I have to wait.

The Worry Website

My rating: *****
After reading this book I would like to
know what Greg's worry was. In
the book each chapter was a child's worry and how they solved their problem. My favourite character was Samantha because she has the same name as my mum. My least favourite character was William because he was mean to Natasha because she could not talk or walk. This book made me think of my worry and my worry is that one day my dog will die and I am not looking forward to that day because one of my other dogs died. Her name was Bonita.

PS. I am still working through HP 5. Not long now.

Best Friends

In between two sleepovers, I read another Jacqueline Wilson book. It is called Best Friends. My rating: ***

Alice and Gemma are best friends. I didn't like the story because they had to separate from each other because Alice moved to Scotland to live. Gemma was so scared of losing her best friend because Alice told her about a new girl she met called Flora. When Gemma went to meet Alice, Flora was really mean to her. Flora said she was going to cut Alice & Gemma's birthday cake so Gemma got angry and threw the cake in Flora's face. Gemma got sent home for being naughty.

This book made me feel a bit sad because my best friend moved to Australia just like Alice.

NEXT: I've just started HP5.

HP 4

I finished reading Book 4 of the Harry Potter series today. My favourite character in this book was Fleur Delacour. She was the champion from Beauxbatons, which is a school in France for wizards and witches. She struggled a bit in the second challenge when she got caught by the grindylows. Harry Potter kindly rescued Fleur's sister for her when she was unable to do it herself.
I didn't enjoy the part where Lord Voldemort returned to his old self because the author made it sound really disgusting and he was white and had no eyes.
I enjoyed the part where Harry and Ron found out Viktor Krum was dating Hermione because Ron had never spoken to Viktor and he was a big fan and wanted his autograph. Ron was really jealous of Hermione and the author made it really funny when Harry and Ron found out.
I am looking forward to reading book 5, which is called Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Saturday, 1 January 2011

HP 3

I finished reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban today.
My rating: ****
My favourite character was Buckbeak because he was only angry when somebody said something bad about him. He is a hippogriff, which is a magical creature that is half horse and half eagle. A question I would like to ask the author is "Did you come up with the combination of the hippogriff?"
The prisoner of Azkaban is Sirus Black, and the people who guard the prison are called Dementors. They are creatures with only a slit for a mouth and they suck the happiness out of the air. In the end, Sirus Black was not the one who told Voldemort to kill Harry's parents. It was actually Peter Pettigrew, who was one of Harry's father's best friends. So, Sirus Black was going to have his soul sucked out by the Dementors, but Harry and Hermione went back in time three hours and rescued him on the hippogriff.
Out of the first three Harry Potter books, this one was not as good as the second one. I am going to start the next book tomorrow, on the first day of the new year. I can't wait to find out what Harry has to do.
